Your data, minded

Privacy policy.

Plain-spoken answers about what we keep, why we keep it, and the control you have over it.

Overview

Foodminder helps you keep track of the food in your fridge, freezer and pantry so you can use it up before it goes to waste. To do that we handle a small amount of information about you and your kitchen. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We do not sell your personal data, we do not show ads, and we do not use third-party advertising or analytics trackers.

Information we collect

Account information

  • Your name and email address, provided by your chosen sign-in — Sign in with Apple, Google, or Microsoft. We receive a basic profile from them; we never see your password.
  • An account identifier we use to store your kitchen and keep your data separate from other users.

Your kitchen data

  • The food items you add and their quantities, prices, storage locations, categories and expiry dates.
  • Actions you take (used, binned, portions) and the points you earn.
  • Any homes and households you set up, and the members you invite to share a kitchen.

Receipt & product photos

  • When you scan a receipt or product label, the photo you capture is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) so it can read the items and add them to your kitchen. The image is used only to extract the items — not to identify you — and we do not store the photo after it has been processed.
  • You can always add items by hand instead, and we only access your camera while a scan is in progress.

Forwarded order emails

  • If you use email import, the order-confirmation email you forward to your personal Foodminder address is read to create a basket of items. We extract the products only and disregard personal details in the message (such as your address or payment information).

Barcodes & product lookups

  • When you scan a barcode or we look up an item's health rating, we send only the barcode number or the product name to product databases (Open Food Facts and FatSecret) to fill in details, nutrition and an image. We do not send your photo or your identity.

Support & diagnostics

  • Messages you send us through the contact form.
  • Crash and error reports (via Sentry) that help us keep the app stable. These are configured to exclude personal identifiers.

How we use it

  • To run your inventory, send expiry reminders and suggest recipes and healthier swaps.
  • To read the receipts, emails and products you scan so items are added for you.
  • To look up product details and health ratings.
  • To let you share a kitchen with the household members you invite.
  • To respond to support requests, keep the service secure, and fix problems.
  • To send occasional product-update emails, which you can opt out of at any time.

Lawful bases (UK/EU)

Where UK or EU data-protection law applies, we rely on: performance of a contract (to provide the app you signed up for); legitimate interests (to keep the service secure, working and improving), balanced against your rights; and consent (for optional marketing emails, which you can withdraw at any time).

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers that help us run Foodminder, under agreements that require them to protect it:

  • Microsoft Azure — hosting and the database that stores your kitchen.
  • Anthropic — the AI that reads your scanned receipts, labels and forwarded emails.
  • Open Food Facts and FatSecret — product and nutrition lookups.
  • Apple, Google and Microsoft — the sign-in you choose.
  • Sentry — crash and error diagnostics (no personal identifiers).

If you invite people to share a home or household, the items and activity in that shared kitchen are visible to those members. We may also disclose information where required by law.

International transfers

Some of our providers (for example the AI and product-lookup services) may process data outside the UK and EEA, including in the United States. Where they do, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

Retention & deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete individual items at any time, or delete your whole account from Settings → Delete account in the app. When you delete your account we remove your personal data from our live systems promptly and from backups within 30 days, except where we are legally required to keep something. See our data-deletion page for details.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, export or restrict the personal information we hold, to object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent. To exercise any of these, use Settings → Delete account in the app or reach us via the contact page. If you are in the UK or EU and are unhappy with our response, you can complain to your data-protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office).

Cookies & tracking

The app does not use third-party advertising or analytics trackers. This website uses only what is needed to load the page and, on the contact form, a spam-protection check (hCaptcha). We do not build advertising profiles.

Security

We protect your data in transit (HTTPS) and at rest, and restrict access to it. The app also offers an optional biometric lock. No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to safeguard your information and will let you know promptly if anything material changes.

Children

Foodminder is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes we will update the date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the app.
